OAS001 : GUIGUISUISUI / From Another Dimension

Covert art by Dann Gaymer

OAS001 : GUIGUISUISUI / From Another Dimension

First release on the new ‘Asian’ series based exclusively on Asian musicians (but Japanese, see the 'Japanese' series for that) / non Asian musicians living in Asia or any combination possible between Asian musicians and the rest of the world, is Beijing based GUIGUISUISUI, a two piece journey into sounds and performances.
Man and woman, East and West, past and future, side by side, blending 8-bit electronics meditation samples whilst channeling blues, rock, hip hop, doom, punk, noise, and ambient bliss while performing an avante garde opera featuring a number of characters.
This particular release focuses on the duo of preacher and minister for the cult of greed Lord Kamemameha and high priestess of profit Lady Chakra, including tracks and remixes from the ‘Wu Xing’ EP as well as an earlier incarnation of Lord Kamemameha from when GUIGUISUISUI was still a solo project.
Lady Chakra: vocals, percussion.
Lord Kamemameha: vocals, guitars, bass, synths, beats, samples.

‘Zombie Land’ and ‘Shadow Of The Moon’ Recorded by Yang Haisong at Psychic Kong in Beijing, China and in an apple tree in Dartford, England; mixed and mastered by Li Shenjie at Ran Music in Beijing, China. From the ‘Wu Xing’ EP: Bandcamp link

‘Cutting Ceaser Down’ recorded and mixed by GUIGUISUISUI in Beijing, China. From the ‘GUIGUISUISUI vs Black Science’ EP on Nasty Wizard Recordings / Hell Is Now Love: Bandcamp link

For the remixes:

Thruoutin is an American producer based in Beijing, China who combines heavily sampled electronic elements accented by vocals and the Chinese lute, ‘pipa’. He has toured extensively around Asia and the north American, including a Taiwan tour with an earlier incarnation of GUIGUISUISUI, and released through a number of labels. Bandcamp link

Lastboss is a British multi genre producer currently based in Zhuhai, China. While he lends his talents to many types of electronic music his ambient works are what caught the attention of GUIGUISUISUI due to his lush and mesmerizing dreamscapes, swirling around like an ocean of sound. Bandcamp link

Dee is a Chinese artist based in Beijing who constantly crosses back and forth between experimental dance, avante garde performance, and meditative noise. Sampling the every day and seemingly mundane, Dee constantly reinvents the world around him in a manner that is sometimes confrontational but always intriguing. Bandcamp link

Dazed Marrow is an American multi genre producer based in South Korea. Excelling at sinister yet fascinating soundscapes with infectious beats nestled beneath, Dazed Marrow sounds like a Harkonen dance party on Ghedi Prime from ten thousand years in the future,  which is perhaps why he’s signed to the same label as William Shatner, Cleopatra Records. OUC002 : Helix 2 / Slower

Cover art by John Franek

OUC002 : Helix 2 / Slower

After releasing his solo album 'La mer dans le ciel' (see ODG063), American contemporary composer and musician John Franek return with another project: Helix 2, a new piano duo composed of himself and Mike Ryan.

Slower is an album composed entirely of improvisations for two pianos and these pieces are filled with lively melodic action, rhythmic precision and fast changing harmonic qualities. Helix 2 also performs concerts of established four-hand and two piano repertoire, with a concert scheduled as far into the future as Paris in 2019.

The music is definitely contemporary but the use of an organ and the added electronics give it a different edge than the usual four hands piano pieces. One could feel some reminiscences with Steve Reich, Wim Mertens or Philip Glass or the minimalism mouvement, but Helix 2 brings something more romantic to the genre.

OUC001 : Gao Yanqin / Prelude

OUC001 : Gao Yanqin / Prelude

First release on the new (Un)classical Collisions series dedicated to all kind of contemporary classical music or (un)classical trained musicians composing in an un classical way or using their classical instrument in an un classical manner, twisting sounds with whatever, electronics, field recordings, electroacoustic...is the Ep album 'Prelude' from Yanqin Gao.

She is a computer-based composer and filmmaker living presently in Shanghai after finishing her education in Beijing Film Academy and China Academy of Art.
Her music is often inspired from silent movie, film noir and visual artworks and
she tends to make dark and weird notes influenced by impressionism period, jazz chord and atonal music.
She also makes story-telling video works for her music and is currently exhibiting her various works in China.

The four tracks on 'Prelude' are a subtle combination of West meets East (un)classical collisions and the simple and very modern contemporary way of posing her voice on track three add a singular emotion to her music.

ODG066 : Boxface / Life Is Fluid

Cover art by Boxface

ODG066 : Boxface / Life Is Fluid

Matthew James aka Boxface is an experimental rock DIY outfit living in San Luis Obispo, California.
He juxtaposes hard rock with ambient textures and passages, sometimes reminiscent of the no wave genre that was in vogue in New-York in the beginning of the 80ties or the hardcore punk / post-hardcore genre pioneered by bands like Black Flag.
Adding some prog and folk sonorities to his songs make them definitely new and original.
As he is saying himself: « To describe the sound of my music, imagine falling into a vat of vibrant swirling paint. Prepare your earbuds for an experimental, progressive rock journey. »

ORT018 : Vansina - Verbruggen - Gudmundsson / St. Cecilia

Cover art by Bruno Vansina

ORT018 : Vansina - Verbruggen - Gudmudsson / St. Cecilia

The cooperation between Bruno Vansina (saxes - see also ORT007 Vansina Orchestra) and Teun Verbruggen (drums - see also almost all on Rat-Off) makes the pivot of this trio that was formed at the conservatory of Brussels in 1996.
They got their initial inspiration from the trio recordings of Sonny Rollins 'Live At The Village Vanguard'. The music of Miles Davis Sextet with John Coltrane and Canonball Adderley, and the music of Chet Baker had it's influence as well.

In 2003 Gulli Gudmundsson (bass - bio) joined the band and was an immediate enrichment.
Existing compositions by Bruno Vansina were a starting point along with some standards and originals.
This repertory became more and more expanded, it deepened and got tested by their urge
to experiment. Little by little, free- and collective improvisations became a major part of their music.
A very personal playing style developed and was more and more perfected during their shows. You could call it ‘growing up in public’.
A first album called ‘Trio Music’ was recorded in 2003.
In 2005 they created Double Trio – a confrontation between a jazz trio and three dancers -, with the internationally renowned dance company Rosas.
A year later they were on tour with the Fender-Rhodes mammoth Jozef Dumoulin (who played with the trio at the Flemish Jazz Meeting 2007 as guest) and Magic Malik, who got himself noticed on St-Germain’s Boulevard album. The tour resulted in a live album called ‘In Orbit’ and two years later another one called 'Tokio Quantize ’.
The trio still played over the past years although less frequently.
The ‘St. Cecilia album was recorded by the trio in 2008, one year after the release of ‘Tokio Quantize’.
This particular session was completely improvised freely, using a lot of electronic devices,
loop machines keyboards etc … This approach was never experimented live and was in a way quite different and unusual for the trio.
The recording was almost forgotten and lost on a old backup hard disc but was recently rediscovered by Bruno.
Listening back to the music he felt the urge to release the session, as a document not to be lost and because the music made him smile.
He then asked mixing and mastering maestro Pierre Vervloesem to get the music, or whatever non music, out of the lengthy recorded session.
The result is a psychedelic-free-jazz session. Three musician friends experimenting around with confidence and joy, like playful kids.
